Ideal

In spite of those wishing to argue the contrary, there exists a base reality on which is built our own subjective perceptions of it.  Just as the flavor of meat remains independent of its seasonings and each diner will take his or her steak differently so does the very real objective “reality” remain independent of each of our own inner perceptions which flavor it.  Similarly, too, too much seasoning overpowers the natural flavor of the meat, rather than complementing and enhancing it.  It is not merely a vehicle on which to transport spices – we could use a spoon to achieve the same gagworthy goal – but should itself remain the true focus.

On to dessert – a proper cupcake provides a well balanced ratio of frosting to cake.  The cake should be good enough on its own, but frosting gives it something just a little bit extra.  Now, what about frosting on its own?  The enjoyment of it solo is not so uncommon, but consisting primarily of sugar, it is not healthy to do so with frequency.  Just so should we view our relationship with reason (cake) and emotion (frosting).  Reason is good enough on its own but can be even more palatable with a smear of feeling.  Once in a while, we may need to wallow or rant or otherwise focus a bit more on our emotions, but we must not turn it into a lifestyle.  Considering the big picture of our lives, our adherence to self-control in that respect can be the cake, while our few indulgences add just enough frosting.

With any flavor, too much of a good thing can prove detrimental.  Over-indulgence of our senses can make them less keen, rendering them less capable of appreciating subtleties and putting them on a cyclical path of needing more and more potent sensations while simultaneously becoming less able to experience satisfaction.  With this cyclical path being wide and well worn, it is just such sporadic instances – and instances only – of indulgence which make it far easier to transition out of it as a lifestyle.  The trick becomes recognizing the true nature of each moment, how the experience of the indulgence departs from when it is controlled.  What flavor comes to the forefront when not stifled by unnecessary overload?  What of substance gets revealed when contrasted with the superfluous?
